Weekly Music Video

This week it's a video by Sugababes. They're a British girl group who have had several line-up changes due to problems within the band. Sugababes started out with Keisha Buchanan, Mutya Buena and Siobhan Donaghy in 1998. Mutya and Keisha were friends already.

They released their first album One Touch in 2000 but Siobhan left in 2001 and later said that she was bullied by Keisha during her time in the group. She was replaced by Heidi Range, a former member of Atomic Kitten (another group that has changed its members a lot!). Sugababes then released their second album Angels With Dirty Faces, which is their most successful album so far.

In 2005, Mutya left the group, due to personal reasons after having a baby. Her replacement was Amelle Berrabah and the girls re-recorded their fourth album Taller In More Ways. The line-up changes weren't over yet though and in 2009 Keisha left, saying that she was basically kicked out, since it wasn't her choice to leave. She was replaced by former Eurovision contestant Jade Ewen.

The group haven't released anything since their seventh studio album Sweet 7. According to Wikipedia they began a hiatus in 2012. Heidi appeared on celebrity ice skating show Dancing On Ice last year and Jade was a contestant on celebrity diving show Splash this year. The girls are now working on an 8th album.

Sugababes have gone through so many line-up changes that they've lost their "essence" really, especially since there are now no original members left. Ironically, the original three members have reformed under the name Mutya Keisha Siobhan (MKS) and are working on their debut album. They can't use the name Sugababes because it's still in use by Heidi, Amelle and Jade.

My favourite Sugababes' incarnation was Keisha, Mutya and Heidi. I liked their music best in the earlier days when it was a bit more garage/R'n'B sounding, compared to the more recent pop sound. I also thought that Mutya, Keisha and Heidi's voices fitted together nicely.

Here is one of my favourite songs, Freak Like Me,  from Angels With Dirty Faces. Freak Like Me is a cover of American singer Adina Howard's Freak Like Me and is mixed with Gary Numan's group Tubeway Army's song Are Friends Electric? It came out in 2002.

25th Anniversary of Mariah Carey's Butterfly Album

My favourite singer Mariah Carey recently released a 25th anniversary edition of her 6th studio album Butterfly. The original album was released on 16th September 1997 and featured songs such as her hit single Honey, The Roof and My All. It was actually the first album I ever bought (on cassette tape, lol) and I still consider it one of my fave MC albums. :) Butterfly was the first album that Mariah had more control over and it is R'n'B, rather than the pop (and later pop/R'n'B) of her previous releases. It also has pop and hip hop influences.  The expanded edition contain 8 extra tracks (the original standard edition has 12)- a duet version of Whenever You Call with Brian McKnight , a new take on The Roof featuring Brandy , live versions of Butterfly and My All, acapella versions of Fourth of July and Outside, an Amorphous Anniversary Club Mix of Butterfly (with DJ Amorphous ) and a remix of Honey (Another Taste of Honey David Morales Mix). I had previously heard the

Debut XG Mini Album

Japanese girl group XG have released their 1st mini album. It's called NEW DNA and was released on 27th September. XG (whose name is short for Xtraordinary Girls) made their debut in March last year and have brought out 7 singles so far- Tippy Toes, MASCARA, LEFT RIGHT/SHOOTING STAR double single), GVRL GANG , TGIF, NEW DANCE and PUPPET SHOW. The first 3 songs (or 4 including the double single) aren't on the mini album. The concept behind NEW DNA is that of being a "new species" free from conventions and limitations .  Although the group is Japanese, their creation was inspired by Korean music and they are based in South Korea. They have released songs in English so far and have been described as a global group and "X-pop". NEW DNA consists of 6 tracks- HESONO, X-GENE, GVRL GANG, TGIF, NEW DANCE and PUPPET SHOW. It is an R'n'B/pop mini album with influences from other genres, such as K-pop, dance and hip hop. My favourite song is PUPPET SHOW. I al
