J-pop Acts

I've done quite a few posts on Japanese and Korean singers and groups, so to fit in with September's J-pop and K-pop theme I thought I'd do a round-up of my favourite acts. I was going to do both Japanese and Korean acts but it was turning into a mega post, so I'll start with the J-pop ones and do K-pop next time!

Koda Kumi

Koda Kumi is my favourite Japanese singer. She's very popular in Japan and this year is her 15th anniversary of being in the music business. Here are some Koda related links:

Namie Amuro

Namie Amuro is my second favourite Japanese singer. She is also very popular in Japan, with a long running career of 23 years! Check out these Namie links:

Utada Hikaru

I also like Japanese American singer Utada Hikaru. I tend to prefer her English music to Japanese but like some J-pop songs as well.

Ayumu Hamasaki and Gackt

Ayumi Hamasaki is another top J-pop female star and GACKT (full name Gackt Camui) is a successful male star. I featured them both in a Girls vs Boys post in 2013: http://starsparklex.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/girls-vs-boys-j-pop.html

Hiromi

Hiromi (full name Hiromi Miyake) is a Japanese R'n'B singer who I discovered in 2011. I have her mini album True Colors. I also really liked the songs on her Christmas  mini album Hot Chocolate and wanted it one Christmas but found it hard to get hold of at the time. I haven't heard any new music of hers for ages but see on her Jpop Asia page that she has a new song called Tequila Sunrise, so I'll check that out.

Jasmine

Jasmine was another singer who I discovered in 2011. Her music is also more on the R'n'B side. There is more info available on her in English now, she has a Wikipedia entry which she didn't before. I really liked songs off her debut album GOLD but that was also hard to get hold of. She has another album called Complexx now.

I only recently was introduced to Japanese boyband J Soul Brothers. Read more about them and watch the video for J.S.B. DREAM here: http://starsparklex.blogspot.co.uk/2015/09/j-soul-brothers-japanese-boyband.html

EXILE TRIBE

J Soul Brothers are part of supergroup EXILE TRIBE, along with groups including EXILE and GENERATIONS. For more on them visit this post: http://starsparklex.blogspot.co.uk/2015/09/weekly-music-video_16.html

J Soul Brothers (Japanese boyband)

I don't know that many Japanese boybands. It's funny but I mostly know Korean groups and Japanese solo singers! I know KAT-TUN, Arashi (although they're more of a rock group, I think) and Hey! Say! JUMP but not many more. A friend recently introduced to me the band (or vocal and dance unit) J Soul Brothers, so I thought today I'd do a post about them. And of course it fits into the J-pop and K-pop theme I'm doing this month! This is a good opportunity to find more J-pop boybands too. :)

The J Soul Brothers were originally formed in 1998 but have gone through two line-up changes. The current incarnation- full title Sandaime (Third Generation) J Soul Brothers from EXILE TRIBE* or J Soul Brothers III- was formed in 2010 by HIRO who is the leader of Japanese boyband EXILE (which has an impressive 19 members!) and founding member of the First Generation J Soul Brothers.  It was decided that EXILE and former Nidaimie (Second Generation) J Soul Brothers members NAOTO and …

So Sharp: Dance Squad

So Sharp: Dance Squad is an American reality TV series about the University of Louisville Ladybird Dance Team run by Todd Sharp. It's set in Louisville, Kentucky. As you'll know if you follow this blog, I'm a fan of dance reality shows such as Dance Moms and Bring It! So I was interested when So Sharp started in the UK a few weeks ago.

Todd is head coach along with Sheryl Knight, a former Ladybird herself. Todd has also coached the Floyd Central Dazzlers. The team have won 15 national championships so far.

As with the other dance reality shows, there's a lot of drama! Marissa Hall is close to Todd and describes him as like a father to her. She is considered one if the best dancers and her close relationship with Todd rubs some people up the wrong way, particularly Michelle Carpenter. Rose Crombie is one of Marissa's main rivals but according to the Decidr article about the team (see below) they're close. Gabrielle Iannone struggles sometimes with the choreograp…

Dance Videos

It's time for another dance post! I thought I'd feature both modern dance and belly dance today. :)

First of all here are a couple of dance videos by choreographer Rumer Noel. This is one to Everyday by Ariana Grande that was uploaded in January. According to comments on YouTube the man dancing with Rumer at the beginning is called Lucas la Parada.
